Where Alan Turing's eponymous test asked whether machines could imitate human intelligence, the Teilhard Test asks something more uncomfortable about humanity itself: whether the systems we build help us grow into a mature, coordinated, and responsible species, or whether they lock us into a condition of technological adolescence. Drawing on Pierre Teilhard de Chardin's concept of convergent consciousness and the philosophical tradition of developmental maturity, the paper argues that the present era constitutes a civilizational rite of passage – one that is not guaranteed to succeed. We evaluate a range of contemporary technologies against four criteria: reflexivity, convergence without coercion, preservation of differentiation, and alignment of power with responsibility. The analysis reveals a consistent pattern: each generation of technology has increased power faster than responsibility. The paper concludes by examining the "meta-layer" – the reflexive stratum within the technosphere that folds back over existing systems to introduce visibility, consent, and governance – as a promising scaffolding for humanity's passage through this initiatory threshold. Introduction** In 1950, Alan Turing posed a question that would quietly reshape the intellectual landscape of the twentieth century: could a machine convincingly imitate human intelligence? The Turing Test did not merely evaluate machines. It opened a conceptual frontier – and with it, a civilizational predicament. The imitation of intelligence, once achieved, created a new condition: the saturation of information systems, markets, politics, and culture with simulated cognition. The boundaries between signal and meaning, appearance and understanding, reality and imitation began to blur. This was not the disappearance of truth, but the erosion of shared reference points that allow truth to function socially. Philosophers of technology have increasingly named this condition as a form of reality collapse – a systemic failure of shared sensemaking in which facts continue to exist but lose their capacity to coordinate collective understanding or action (Chalmers, 2022; Floridi, 2013; Pariser, 2011). Our existential position as a species is most acute when we sit at such a threshold, as we do now. The question before us is no longer whether machines can appear intelligent. It is whether humanity can remain coherent in the presence of its externalized and simulated intelligence in the form of technology. At this point, a second test becomes unavoidable. This paper proposes the Teilhard Test as a complement to the Turing Test. Where Turing asked about machines, this test asks something about us: whether our technologies help humanity grow into mature, responsible, and coordinated stewardship, or whether they lock us into a condition of technological adolescence – one defined by immense power deployed without corresponding wisdom. The test is grounded in Teilhard de Chardin's concept of convergent consciousness (Teilhard de Chardin, 1959), (see also Vidal, 2024, who frames the noosphere as a major evolutionary transition whose central challenge is solving the cooperation barrier at planetary scale) understood not as uniformity or fusion, but as the increasing capacity of differentiated agents to coordinate meaningfully without losing their distinctiveness. Such a test implements important insights from thinkers who have attempted to conceive and advocate for a non-transcendent or immanent pluralism (Nadler on Spinoza, 2006; Allen, 2005; Connolly, 1995). We argue that this developmental lens – borrowed from cultural psychology (Kegan, 1982\) and philosophy of emergence – offers philosophy of AI a practical criterion for evaluating not just what AI systems do, but what they make humanity become. ## **II. From the Turing Threshold to the Maturity Threshold** The Turing Test established a productive confusion. Once intelligence could be simulated, the question of whether simulated intelligence constituted genuine understanding became permanently unstable (Chalmers, 2022). More significantly, it established a precedent: the evaluation of technology by its capacity to meet human performance standards. The Teilhard Test mirrors this structure but inverts its focus. It does not ask what machines can do. It asks what our relationship to our machines reveals about our own developmental condition. This paper argues that the technological civilizations of the mid-twentieth and twenty-first centuries display all the hallmarks of adolescence: rapid growth in capacity without corresponding maturity, amplified influence without accountability, and expanding power without integration of consequences. Shoshitaishvili (2021) characterizes this condition as humanity’s “technological adolescence” within the Great Acceleration, a period that can be read as either civilizational catastrophe or developmental transition. This initiatory framework – drawn from cross-cultural traditions of rites of passage (Turner, 1969\) – holds that such transitions involve three phases: separation from prior identity, confrontation with ordeal, and reintegration with new obligations to the whole. Artificial intelligence, on this reading, does not merely accelerate existing tendencies. It renders the initiatory passage unavoidable. As intelligence becomes increasingly non-local, non-human, and opaque, humanity faces a choice that cannot be postponed: mature into stewardship or fragment under humanity’s newfound power. The stakes are not merely philosophical. Simulation without understanding, compounded at scale, produces what Floridi (2013) calls "info-globes" – systems of overwhelming data with insufficient semantic integration. At the level of society, this could contribute to the collapse of the shared interpretive infrastructure on which coordinated action depends. Pourdavood et al. (2025) describe this risk concretely in the case of large language models, which perform lossy compression of human knowledge and risk aesthetic drift when recursive loops lose touch with lived interpretive experiences. ## **III. The Technosphere as Developmental Crisis** The technosphere now operates as a planetary force. It shapes perception, incentives, behavior, and ecological conditions at a speed that cultural evolution struggles to match. This has reached a new intensity with artificial intelligence. A developmental analysis reveals a consistent pattern. At each step – personal computers, the Internet, social media, AI systems, autonomous AI agents – power has increased faster than responsibility. Frank et al. (2022) characterize the current Earth as possessing an “immature technosphere” in which aggregate technological activity forces the planet into new states without intentional feedback.This asymmetry between power and responsibility reflects what developmental psychology would describe as a structural lag between capacity and integration (Kegan, 1982). The technosphere expanded, but its lack of reflexive governance allowed power to consolidate around those with capital, leverage, and institutional access, embedded within extractive infrastructures that shape both perception and possibility (Zuboff, 2019; Crawford, 2021). This was not simply the result of bad actors; it was the result of adolescent systems optimizing for short-term gain while externalizing long-term responsibility. As these systems scale, a specific failure mode becomes predominant. Fragmentation does not remain neutral. Siloed perception hardens into a web of epistemic silos, where information circulates within closed loops and shared reference points dissolve. Early accounts of this phenomenon emphasized personalization as a driver of informational isolation (Pariser, 2011); subsequent empirical work demonstrates how algorithmic amplification stabilizes and reinforces these silos at scale, within systems optimized for engagement rather than understanding (Cinelli et al., 2021; Sunstein, 2017; Zuboff, 2019). Under these conditions, informational systems do not merely fragment attention – they restructure the epistemic environment in ways that resist correction. When collective sensemaking fails, coordination gives way to narrative control and dominance, and the demand for simple, centralized authority grows. What appears politically as instability or autocracy is, at root, a developmental failure of convergence. The scale dynamic is critical. In biological maturation, responsibility scales autopoietically with power because the organism experiences feedback from its environment (Maturana and Varela, 1980). Civilizational maturation has historically relied on institutions to provide this feedback. But when the technosphere outpaces institutional learning speed – as it demonstrably has – the feedback loops attenuate or fail entirely. Jacob and Pourdavood (2025) map this asymmetry geographically, showing that humanity’s structural connectivity has expanded dramatically while the infosphere has yet to develop the planetary-scale self-knowledge necessary for coordinated regulation. ## **IV. The Teilhard Test: A Framework** At its core, the Teilhard Test asks a deceptively simple question: Do the systems we build increase humanity's capacity for reflection, coordination, and responsibility at scale, without collapsing diversity or concentrating meaning-making power? This question does not measure efficiency, profitability, or technical sophistication. It evaluates whether humanity as a whole flourishes through technology *and* whether the use of technology bends the technosphere toward coherence or toward entropy. It translates Teilhard's insight – that evolution advances through increasing complexity paired with increasing consciousness (Teilhard de Chardin, 1959\) – into a usable evaluative lens for technological systems. The test operationalizes through four interrelated criteria: 1. **Reflexivity.** Does the system help individuals and collectives in being aware of their actions and decisions? A reflexive system provides feedback on actions, incentives, and consequences. It supports learning, correction, and accountability. Systems that automate decisions while obscuring how or why outcomes occur – or leave out human interpretation – fail this criterion. 2. **Convergence without coercion.** Does the system enable coordination across difference without enforcing uniformity? Convergence is not consensus – it is the capacity to orient together while remaining plural. Systems that achieve alignment through manipulation, suppression, or incentive distortion undermine genuine cooperation. 3. **Preservation of differentiation.** Does the system preserve human agency, role diversity, and contextual meaning? Mature systems allow individuals and communities to remain distinct while participating in larger wholes. Systems that flatten people into metrics, profiles, or optimization targets erode the conditions for higher-order coherence. Convergence does not mean lack of individual human participation. 4. **Alignment of power and responsibility.** As power scales, does responsibility scale with it? A system passes this test if authority is matched by accountability, repair mechanisms, and ethical feedback loops. Systems that concentrate power while externalizing harm or responsibility fail. This draws on political philosophy of the commons (Ostrom, 1990\) and recent work on AI governance (Floridi & Cowls, 2019). ## **V. The consistent failure across most phases is not a moral indictment but a developmental observation: these systems were built in an adolescent technosphere and optimized for the conditions that produced them. ## VI. The Meta-Layer as Maturation Scaffold The concept of a meta-layer refers to a reflexive layer of interaction and governance that operates above existing digital systems, rather than within them. Rather than replacing underlying platforms or protocols, a meta-layer overlays them, introducing context, visibility, and coordination at the interfaces where users, information, and automated systems meet. This idea builds on earlier proposals for a “Metaweb,” understood as a persistent, interoperable layer of annotation, identity, and collective sensemaking that spans across the web’s fragmented infrastructures (Bridgit DAO, 2023). Within this framing, the meta-layer is not a single technology, but an architectural pattern: a means of restoring feedback loops, shared context, and participatory governance in an increasingly complex technosphere. Adulthood does not emerge spontaneously. It is scaffolded through norms, laws, boundaries, and shared accountability. The meta-layer, as theorized here, refers to a reflexive stratum within the technosphere that folds back over existing systems, introducing visibility, context, consent, and governance at the interfaces where humans and systems meet. The meta-layer does not replace existing systems. It sits above them, restoring feedback loops between action and consequence. It makes power legible. It enables coordination without coercion. In developmental terms, the meta-layer functions as an initiation structure for a technological civilization – creating the conditions under which maturity has a chance to emerge. Concrete candidates for meta-layer components include: algorithmic auditing frameworks (Raji et al., 2020), platform governance models that distribute decision-making authority across stakeholder groups, and reflexive standards bodies with real-time adaptive capacity. Each represents a mechanism by which the technosphere develops the capacity to observe, evaluate, and correct its own trajectory. The meta-layer is not a single system but a family of related interventions – a "governance infrastructure." Its essential property is recursion: it applies the evaluative criteria of the Teilhard Test to itself, asking whether its own governance structures are reflexive, convergent, differentiated, and balanced in power and responsibility. In this sense, the meta-layer functions as a condition for the coherent operation of systems already in place. Whether the meta-layer will be built – and whether it will be built well – depends on whether the initiatory passage is recognized as such. This requires not only technical and political will, but the conceptual vocabulary to name the moment. The Teilhard Test is an attempt to provide that vocabulary. ## **VII. Conclusion** The noosphere is not a mystical destination. It is an empirical capacity that becomes possible when a species learns to carry planetary-scale power with planetary-scale responsibility. The Turing Test was valuable because it was concrete: it asked whether machines could imitate human intelligence and a human could judge that intelligence to be indistinguishable. The Teilhard Test asks whether humanity can grow into the intelligence it has created, pointing to the need for a threshold we can use to evaluate human maturity with respect to these new technologies. It asks whether, as power scales, wisdom, accountability, and shared sensemaking scale with it. Passing this test is not guaranteed. But failure is no longer abstract, which is the mandate for something like the Teilhard Test to name this initiatory threshold of our technological species, offering criteria by which to evaluate whether we are moving through it productively or careening past it toward fragmentation. The question before the philosophy of AI is not only what intelligent systems can do, but how they interact with – and become a shaping environment for – the species that creates them.
